Geese are among the most useful and characterful birds you can keep on a property. Roman Tufted geese — one of our featured breeds — are a compact, friendly heritage variety known for their distinctive crest, calm temperament, and strong maternal instincts. They are well suited to small farm and backyard environments where larger breeds like Embden or Toulouse geese might be overwhelming.
Why farms and homesteads keep geese:
- Effective natural lawn managers — geese graze grass and weeds continuously, reducing mowing in orchards and paddocks
- Strong property guardians — geese are alert, vocal, and territorial, and will reliably alarm at the presence of strangers or predators
- Excellent egg producers — goose eggs are 3–4 times the size of chicken eggs, with rich flavor ideal for baking
- Long-lived birds — well-cared-for geese commonly live 15–20 years, making them a long-term property asset
- Low feed cost — on pasture, geese can meet a substantial portion of their nutritional needs through grazing alone
What to expect from our geese:
- Available as goslings or breeding pairs depending on season
- Roman Tufted and other heritage breeds depending on availability
- Ships with live arrival guarantee on every order

Frequently Asked Questions
Are geese aggressive? Geese can be territorial, particularly during nesting season in spring. Roman Tufted geese are among the calmer breeds and are generally manageable with regular handling from a young age. Ganders (males) are more likely to display territorial behavior than females. Geese raised around people from gosling age are typically far less aggressive than those with minimal human contact.
How much space do geese need? Geese are larger birds and do best with access to open pasture or a large yard. A minimum of 10–15 square feet of outdoor space per bird is recommended, though more is always better. Access to a shallow water source — a stock tank or small pond — is strongly recommended for bathing and natural behavior.
Do geese need a pond? Geese do not require a full pond but benefit greatly from access to water deep enough to submerge their heads and splash. A large stock tank, rubber tub, or small garden pond works well for small flocks. Geese without water access are more prone to eye and nasal issues over time.
